I started by journey from Thanjavur.

Around 9 p.m., I boarded a state transport bus to Rameswaram (250 kilometers / 5hour ride) charging INR 165.

Dhanushkodi

From Arichal Munai, a ride of INR 100 will drop you at Dhanushkodi.

Venturing to the southernmost tip of India’s Rameswaram Island, I started on a journey to the mystical town of Dhanushkodi. This place has a fascinating history and a captivating aura around it. .

Join me as I share my personal experience of exploring Dhanushkodi, a destination where the remnants of the past coexist harmoniously with the serene beauty of nature.

Mesmerizing Musuem

The epic Ramayana describes Lord Rama as building a bridge (referred to as Ram Setu) at Dhanushkodi to reach Lanka. When I walked through the ruins of the ancient town, I couldn’t help but imagine the awe-inspiring stories and legends associated with this site.

The once bustling coastal town of Dhanushkodi was devastated by a catastrophic cyclone in 1964, leaving behind ruins that serve as a haunting reminder of its former glory. As I explored the church, railway station, and homes, I witnessed nature reclaiming its territory in an eerily beautiful way.

There is a mesmerizing confluence of waters at Dhanushkodi, where the Bay of Bengal meets the Indian Ocean. The two vast bodies of water clashed magnificently at the Sangam point. I felt insignificant yet connected to something much bigger as I watched the swirling currents and the vastness of the ocean.

The beaches of Dhanushkodi stretch for miles, fringed with golden sand and turquoise waters. As I strolled along the shore, feeling the gentle caress of the sea breeze and listening to the rhythmic sound of the waves crashing against the shore, I felt the gentle caress of the sea breeze. It was here that I was able to reconnect with nature and find inner peace amidst the chaos of daily life.

Sea shell marts are something that I found most unique in Rameshwaram. Sea shell handicrafts are also available in shops around the temples. There is also  a large quantity of chemically cleaned all variety of sea shells.

Visiting Dhanushkodi was an extraordinary journey, combining history, spirituality, and natural splendor. Experiencing the ruins, witnessing the confluence of waters, strolling along the serene beaches, and immersing myself in the captivating sunset filled me with awe and appreciation.

A visit to Dhanushkodi is an opportunity to embrace the beauty of nature, connect with the past, and find comfort in the present. I encourage all travelers to add it to their bucket list, as it will always hold a special place in my heart.

Ramar Patham

In the midst of the tranquil town of Rameswaram, I embarked on a spiritual journey to Ramar Patham, a sacred place steeped in mythology and revered by devotees from all over the world.

This place is about 4kms from city center on a hill top. Autorickshaws usually charge about INR 60 for a one way ride.

Footsteps of the Divine

On his way to Lanka to rescue his beloved wife, Sita, Lord Rama, accompanied by his devoted brother Lakshmana and the mighty monkey god Hanuman, stood at Ramar Patham. It is believed to be divine footprints imprinted on the ground near Rameswaram left by Lord Rama.

Located in a picturesque landscape with lush greenery and gently swaying palm trees, Ramar Patham is surrounded by lush greenery. As the surroundings complemented the spiritual aura of the place, I was able to immerse myself in introspection and contemplation. My experience was enhanced by the gentle rustle of leaves and distant sounds of birds.

The site is marked by a small temple that houses an ancient idol of Lord Rama. Pure and devotional aromas drifted through the air as incense wafted through the air.

The experience of visiting Ramar Patham was profoundly enriching and spiritually uplifting for me. The place inspires awe and reverence in those who seek solace and spiritual nourishment, leaving an everlasting impression.

Those seeking a transcendent experience are invited to walk in the footsteps of the divine and discover the divine grace that awaits them at Ramar Patham.

Next I travel to the house of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam (who was the 11th President of India). A museum now occupies the house, allowing visitors to experience the life of one of India’s greatest visionaries.

House of Kalam (APJ Abdul Kalam Museum)

Glimpse into History

As I entered the Kalam House, I felt a profound sense of awe knowing that I was stepping into the very space where Dr. Kalam’s journey began. The house, a simple structure, stands as a testament to his modest upbringing and the values instilled in him by his parents.

Dr. Kalam’s insatiable thirst for knowledge can be seen in this museum, which contains a treasure trove of books. It reflects the breadth of his intellectual curiosity that the shelves are stacked with volumes on science, technology, philosophy, and spirituality.

Additionally, the house displays artifacts that showcase his contributions to science and technology, including rockets and satellite models.

It was these words of wisdom that served as constant reminders of his vision for a better future and his belief in the power of dreams.

Photographs, mementos, and personal belongings decorate the room, telling the story of his extraordinary life. His awards, handwritten notes, and cherished possessions made me feel a profound sense of connection, reminding me of his unwavering dedication to his country.

An opportunity to see the childhood home of a scientist, educator, and leader was provided by the house.

Lakshmana Tirtham

Another place worth visiting is the Lakshmana Tirtham.

It is believed that Lakshmana Tirtham was the place where Lord Rama’s loyal brother sought redemption from his sins.

Legend has it that Lakshmana sought guidance from Lord Rama after killing Ravana’s son Indrajit unintentionally. Upon Rama’s instruction, he bathed in the holy waters of Lakshmana Tirtham, purifying his soul in the process.

The Majestic Temple

Upon reaching Lakshmana Tirtham, I was greeted by the sight of a beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Lakshmana

The site is marked by a small temple that houses an ancient idol of Lord Rama. Pure and devotional aromas drifted through the air as incense wafted through the air.

The highlight of my visit was the sacred bathing ritual in the serene waters of Lakshmana Tirtham. Many devotees believe that immersing themselves in these holy waters brings purification and divine blessings

The sacredness of the place, the rituals, and the natural beauty surrounding it created an atmosphere of tranquility and connection with the divine. Lakshmana Tirtham is a place where one can seek solace, find renewal, and immerse oneself in the rich tapestry of Hindu mythology.

Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple

Visit to Rameswaram is not complete unless you visit the Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple. It is also one of the twelve Jyotirlinga temples.

Located on the holy island of Rameswaram, Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple is a beacon of devotion and spiritual solace. Its rich history, architectural grandeur, and the belief that a visit to this temple brings salvation inspired my journey to this revered pilgrimage site.

Rituals and Devotion

Located on the holy island of Rameswaram, Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple is a beacon of devotion and spiritual solace. Also in front of the temple lies Agni Theertham, a sacred bathing ghat where devotees believe that a dip in the holy waters will cleanse them of their sins. Witnessing countless pilgrims offering their prayers and participating in this sacred ritual together was humbling and unifying.

The site is marked by a temple that houses an ancient idol of Lord Rama. Pure and devotional aromas drifted through the air as incense wafted through the air.

While walking through the temple’s vast corridors, I marveled at the ornate pillars and exquisite sculptures. It was clear that the craftsmen who built the temple paid great attention to detail and incorporated spiritual symbolism into every corner.

The Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram is a pilgrimage that should not be missed if you are seeking a spiritual awakening and a transformative experience.

I would like to express my gratitude to the Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple for the soul-stirring experience that left a lasting impression on my spirit.
